Using the content management system to add a category/menu item
Using the content management system to divide your web site up into areas is a good idea for visitors as it helps to indicate where they can find particular types of information.
About us, News, Products, Services etc are all typical areas on a site. In the Accent-on-Business content management system the terms 'categories', 'menu items' and 'site areas' are pretty well
the same thing. They allow you to categorise your content (articles, stories, pages etc) to guide the visitor.
Of course one of the big advantages of the content management system (CMS) is that these divisions are not set in stone. Let's say if you set up your site, for example, with the category of
Case studies that is in a sub-category of Customer references. Perhaps you decide that Case studies is now so big and important that you want to make it its own main category. Well you can do that by
editing the Case Studies category, moving it where you want, and all the case studies articles themselves will move too. This level of flexibility means that it is easy to reshape your site as your
needs and marketing messages change.
First step is to click on Add a new category. That displays the following form:
Add a title. In most cases you can leave the Description blank. You will only need this if some pages on your site are set up to display descriptive text when displaying a particular list of categories. Similarly, the Thumbnail field (not shown) is also only used where a site displays pictures related to particular categories.
For more information on the Order by field please see Navigation ordering.
Select from Parent site category to specify where your new category should go. Most of the time you will only select one category from this dropdown. But it is possible to have the content management system make your new category to appear in more than place. For example, you may have a single news category that you want to appear in various places. Just select the appropriate parent categories from the Related site categories list.
Now save your category and check that it is appearing correctly on the visitor site. Next step is to use the content management system to add articles/content to your category.
